In a 2018 article about films depicting the experiences of Black Americans, critics for the New York Times praise Madeline Anderson's 1970 film I Am Somebody as "galvanizing" and Carl Franklin's 1995 film Devil in a Blue Dress as "picture-perfect." Fans of the two films hope that such will attract new audiences to these works.
