Text corpora such as the Oxford English Corpus are large collections of electronically stored texts that can be used to determine the frequency of words. (Words used mainly in specialized or academic publications, on the other hand, tend to be poorly represented.) A corpus could reveal, for example, that the word "way" is the fourth most commonly used noun in standard English.
