Stratus clouds form low in the atmosphere. These clouds often cover a large part of the sky in a smooth gray layer. Their name comes from the Latin word stratus, which means “spread out.” Stratus clouds form when a large mass of air cools and the water vapor in the cloud condenses into tiny water droplets. This is why these clouds often bring light rain. On overcast days when the sun can’t be seen, stratus clouds are likely overhead.
