Mary Elizabeth Banning was a self-taught mycologist, or fungi specialist, who researched mushrooms in the late 1800s. Banning documented her findings in The Fungi of Maryland, an unpublished manuscript consisting of 175 watercolor a detailed portrait of a particular species, such as Polyporus beattei, a fungi species of the order Hymenomycetes presented on plate 118.
