In rainforests in Costa Rica, there are large kapok trees. Dead leaves and other falling things collect in the trees’ branches and break down into mats of soil. This is called canopy soil because it forms in a tree’s branches (its canopy). Scientist Catherine L. Cardelús’s 2008 study of canopy soil found that it helps preserve healthy nutrient cycling (how nutrients move through the environment) in forests.
