In a 2022 analysis, researchers applied a statistical model to a set of words to infer the rate of cognate replacement—the rate at which a word will be replaced over time with a noncognate form—in Indo-European languages. The researchers found that negative adjectives like "homeless" evolve most rapidly; ________ negative nouns evolve most slowly.
