Crematogaster nigriceps is an ant species that lives in the whistling thorn acacia tree. The canopies of acacias inhabited by C. nigriceps have a unique shape: because the ants eat the outermost leaves, these canopies are smaller and denser than the canopies of acacias without the ants. A team of scientists wanted to see if lidar (a technology that uses lasers to map landscapes from above) could be employed to identify acacias with C. nigriceps from above based on the trees’ shapes. The scientists found that lidar identified acacias with C. nigriceps with 82% accuracy.
