Many places that gained their independence from Spain in the nineteenth century still bear the legacy of the Spanish Empire in their language, including Spanish-speaking Costa Rica, which left the empire in 1821. _blank ceased to be part of the Spanish Empire in 1714; Spanish is rarely spoken in Luxembourg in the twenty-first century.
