Marie Taglioni made ballet history in 1832 with her role in La Sylphide. For this performance, she special tight-fitting satin slippers that allowed her to dance the entire ballet on the tips of her toes. It was the first time this technique (known as pointe work) had been featured throughout a full-length production.
